Finish What you Started!

Stephen R. Covey in his bazillion-dollar-mega-selling-blockbuster-book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (Fireside) writes that Habit Two is to “Begin with the end in Mind.” I quote from the book…

“To begin with the end in mind means to start with a clear understanding of your destination. It means to know where you’re going so that you better understand where you are now and so that the steps you take are always in the right direction (emphasis mine).”

As an instructor… I see many students who don’t commit to finishing their swing or putting stroke. As a result, each swing or stroke finish is different… and when each finish is different… then…

     Each…
              Swing (stroke)
                        Is…
                               Different!

Which means each shot will be different. PERIOD!

It happens to all of us… water on the left… out-of-bounds on the right… tight landing area… we make an uncommitted swing with a finish that looks like we’ve slammed on the brakes early (or hurt something)… trying to guide the club and steer the ball only to find… the very disaster we were trying to avoid. UGH!

To remedy this and to start developing a consistent swing, “begin with the end in mind.”

For me… for a fullswing… it means making sure that the right side of my body (I’m a right-handed golfer) finishes closer to the target than my left side. That I’m balanced at the end. And that the clubshaft has come to rest behind my head at an angle that appears as if it is going through my ears.

For you… next time your practicing or playing, determine what your finish will look like during your preshot routine (beginning with the end in mind), and always… as in ALWAYS commit that regardless of the quality of the shot, you will finish your swing AND hold it.

I like to have students count their name three times while holding their finish. You can imagine with a last name like Eleftheriou… I’m in the finish position for quite some time!! Check out the video below… you’ll see that I hold my finish regardless if I’m hitting 8-iron or driver! Check out the cool club twirl at the end!

For accomplished players… hold the finish position while the ball is climbing… and only when it starts to descend… should you relax your position, watch it land until it comes to rest.

By committing to a great finish AND holding it… it’s amazing how the swing oftentimes becomes better for the mere reason that a lot of good “stuff” has to happen during the swing to get to that great finish position! Almost MAGICALLY!!

In regards to putting… watch how many pros hold their putting stroke finish for quite some time… oftentimes until the ball drops in the cup! It’s a good… no a GREAT idea for YOU to hold your finish until the ball comes to a complete stop. By holding your putting stroke finish… you will develop a consistent putting stroke which will greatly improve your ball speed.

SSSOOOOOooooo… PICTURE your finish during preshot routine (begin with the end in mind), COMMIT to your finish… and HOLD your finish. Let’s put it this way… I’ve never had a golfer tell me that they hit the ball worse because they made a good finish and held it… never (as in NEVER! EVER!).
