| Post-Impact Position |
Impact position in the golf swing... where club meets ball.... the position that separates amateurs from professionals... appropriately dubbed the "moment of truth."
Great impact should have some of the following key elements (right-hander's perspective)...
- Flat left wrist... bent right wrist...
- Straight left arm... slightly bent right arm...
- Clubshaft leaning forward (toward target and ahead of ball)
- Head back behind ball...
- Weight transferring to left side...
- Hips turned "open" about 45 degrees to target line...
- Shoulders slightly "open" or squared to target line...
- etc...
If you're struggling with achieving proper impact position... then the solution is to break the swing down to a "pitch shot" AND rather than focusing on impact position... focus on POST-IMPACT position (as seen in the image).
Set up as if you were going to hit a full shot... but hit little pitch shots (about 20 yards is plenty)... and hold your finish... meaning HOLD YOUR FINISH! Look for...
Heck... look at the previous list and insert the bullets in the list above. In other words... other than a few slight variations... the finish position in your post-impact position should be pretty darn close to your impact position ( I say close because at post-impact... the right arm has now straightened). If you can get to post-impact with the items listed... then it only makes sense that you were in good position at impact as well.
So don't try to fix impact during your full swing... and don't try to fix impact by only stopping at impact... but rather fix impact by focusing on the results in post-impact.
Once you can execute the pitch shot drill correctly... go back to your full swing and enjoy. Mind you... if you've had poor impact position for years... don't expect to fix it in a day... or two... or week... etc... It takes time to undo!!
